Wedding receptions in Rome may be held at numerous beautiful locations, including hotels, private villas or castles. However, there are only three official locations for civil wedding ceremonies, the wedding halls at Caracalla, Campidoglio and Villa Lais. Ceremonies at these locations are performed by a civil registrar and are legally binding, the ceremony itself takes approximately 20 minutes and is conducted in Italian, so an interpreter will be required, plus two witnesses who are over the age of 18.

The Campidoglio wedding hall is the most formal of the three official venues and is located near the center of Rome. The Caracalla wedding hall is the largest of the three official venues in Rome and is located near the Baths of Caracalla. Villa Lais is a 19th century former chapel that is located in a small park and is suitable for smaller weddings. Non legally binding blessing ceremonies can be held in other private venues throughout the city, there are also more official ceremony locations outside the city of Rome in the Lazio region of Italy.

For Catholic weddings there are over 900 churches to choose from but church weddings cannot be arranged by travel agents or wedding planners. For a catholic wedding in a Church you must talk to your local parish priest who will then prepare the necessary documents for you including pre-nuptual inquiry forms, a baptismal certificate and a letter of freedom. The priest will then send these documents to the bishop of your diocese to ask for a testimonial letter granting you permission for a wedding in Rome. For previously married couples who plan to have a Catholic wedding an annulment may be required, even if the previous marriage was not Catholic. Your documents and testimonial letter will then be sent to your chosen church venue in Rome, this must be done no later than four weeks before your intended wedding date. For Santa Susanna Church weddings, documents must be sent at least two months in advance and it is generally best to start planning your wedding one year in advance because most parishes require a waiting period of at least six months before proceeding.
